This page displays photographs of
the Can Tho Army Airfield base area. (Page 1)
This
page was started with photographs graciously furnished by Rick Stayner. Rick and I were members
of the 550th Signal Company at Can Tho Airfield in 1972/73, and we lived in the same hooch
while there. |

1. A picture of Corporal, our hooch
mascot, standing guard on the porch. Corporal made a very effective watch dog.
People not belonging to our hooch never entered unannounced.
The road leading towards the horizon led out the front gate of the base. On this
road, behind the building was the Comm. Center, our Company Office and the Hospital.
The road leading to the right went to the air tower.

2. Another
picture of Corporal. This time guarding our hooch from the hallway while catching a
few zz's, rather than duty in the hot mid day sun.

5. I have no idea what this is. It almost looks like the
small hut that sold pizza and the MARS station across from it?

6. A picture from the hooch porch, facing in the opposite direction than
the picture of Corporal. The guard bunker on the perimeter behind the pole is where
Joe nursed an M-16, M-60 and M-79 a few nights. The Mess Hall was in this direction, about
a block away.

8. A picture of the children at the
front gate. If they had work permits, they would gather outside the gate and beg,
fight and crawl over each other to gain a daily work detail to police areas, cut grass and
etc. for very little money and food.

9. Another picture of the children.
The type of scene that still wrenches my heart, makes me angry that we could not do
more for them, and brings tears to my eyes when I remember.
Yes, the older street wise ones could slit your pocket with a razor so the change
would fall on the ground and the group would grab it and run. And yes they were
masters at slitting a watch band to steal your watch, and you would never feel it.
But that was what they had to do in order to survive.

Another picture of the TV tower and Calibration vans. From the angle of the shot, it
seems to be from the same porch area of our hooch porch.

12. Our Company truck.
Rick and Hart drove this quite a bit. There was a deuce and a half too, that I
remember riding guard on a few times for hand carrying message traffic to the
compound down town.

14. A closer shot of the same
guard bunker and perimeter, but the shot seems to be from our hooch. I think Rick
said he pulled guard duty in this bunker a few nights.

15. Guard towers and the bunker I
pulled duty in a few times again. The shot seems to be from our hooch area with a
pan to the left of about 90 degrees from the picture above.

19. This was our hooch
Mamasan, she kept our hooch clean, washed
and ironed out clothes and was one of the hardest working people I have ever known.
She was one of the few Vietnamese Corporal would allow into the hooch. God bless you
Mamasan, I hope you are doing well!

31. 1972 The "Great Barracks Fire". I think it took place around Feb. of `72 but I'm not certain. Jim Miller is checking out the aftermath. The look on his face says it all! Most of us lost everything we had that day!

33. 1971 Looking towards Binh Thuy from the second floor of our barracks. They took a rocket attack the night before hitting their ammo dump. The photo looks out of focus but actually it was the ground shaking all the way to Can Tho! For three days we never saw the Sun due to all the smoke etc.!
